Lots of BIGG drum beginning to run with anglers fighting Toe-to-Toe battles with some really big black drum. Speckled trout and whiting are also on the menu with good sized whiting and large trout to 9 lbs making the tally. Drum and whiting are hitting fresh dead shrimp, and trout are biting soft plastics. Jerry goes to church
by Brenda Cannon Henley

Debbie Valentine posted photos on Sunday of her beloved husband, Jerry Valentine, getting a wish that abundantly came true. He wanted badly to be able to attend the Church of Christ on the Bolivar Peninsula that he pastors. He had been unable to attend because of his ongoing battle with cancer. Debbie thanks William, Talissa, and Marcus Comeaux, and Bubba Nelson, for helping

Spring Fever

(Feb-28-2012) This time of year, it’s hard to not get cabin fever. It’s either rainy, cold or foggy, or all three put together. I know, I shouldn’t complain about the rain and I’m really not, anything is better than the lack, or should I say absence of rain we had this past Summer. Anyway, my point is, a day with sunshine is a godsend! So, all day Sunday I spent in the garden: weeding, raking, preparing the ground for some plants I picked up last week on one of my regular trips “to town”. I pulled a couple of cabbage plants out of the garden…I had only left them there because they looked pretty, the actual cabbage had already been chopped off and eaten. Now, all that remains of my Fall garden are some brussel sprout plants and a few tomatoes. This being the first time I ever

All things work together for good…

(Feb-28-2012) Have you ever had something happen to you or a family member that at the time you felt was simply unjust, not right, hurtful, shouldn’t have happened, and one perhaps you did not understand. I am reminded of the Bible story of Joseph who was sold into a life of slavery by his own brothers. His delightful story is found in Genesis, Chapter 50, and yes, I typed “delightful.” You have to read to the end to get it all.

These incidents seem to hurt all the more when whatever has hurt our hearts comes from the hand of a relative, and let’s be honest here, every person I know has that one relative that really gets under their skin. This person for whatever reason can push the button to make us furious with

Bright and Light Color

(Feb-28-2012) Color, color everywhere! Living in Crystal Beach, the overall look of the landscape has changed dramatically since IKE. The new homes going up are not only beautiful but have a wonderful array of colors. When I drive down Hwy 87, it almost feels like we are living in Bermuda or the Bahamas. I love the look and feel of these homes.

Today’s room shows how easy it is to bring the color inside without being overwhelmed! Anyone that has been to my house knows how much I like color. Many people would not want to have brightly colored walls but still want to add that punch and fun we all love at the beach. In this room, there are

I Like It!

Just wanted to say I really like the Crystal Beach Local News! Crystal Beach sorely needed something like this and you all are doing a fantastic job with it! Thank you!!!

From Pamela Couch

Dear Tom & Georgia,
I still come through Bolivar Peninsula at least once a month to go to doctors appts., check mail, pay bills, etc. and then back to Mom’s in Louisiana (who is doing miraculously well) or I go to Mexia to get a good dose of my daughter and grandchildren.

But every time I pass through High Island and see the ocean ahead, my mind wanders of all the great people I have come to know and love on Bolivar. I open the windows to smell the salt air and feel

Cruella and her puppies

(Feb-21-2012) I really can’t remember a year when the parade weather wasn’t terribly uncomfortable. This year, again, we waited for the “all clear” to proceed over to the line up for the parade. Actually, this was our first year to be in the parade and we decided on Cruella, Pongo and Perdita, with the dalmatian ears sewn and ready for weeks. We got up early to decorate the golf cart, only to find out the parade had been postponed until 12:30pm. Whew, it was raining buckets! Then, as we watched the radar and no signs of clearing, we saw another delay until 2:30pm. Finally, the rain stopped and

Hummers

Photo-Ed Snyder/Outdoors

Be on the lookout for these lil critters- being that we’ve had a warmer winter than normal we should start seeing hummers- I’ve seen them as early as March- so please put feeders out to attract the early fly-bys.

Bolivar Mardi Gras 2012
by Georgia Osten

Bolivar Mardi Gras 2012 went off without a hitch – sort of. Due to one of the heaviest rain storms and flooding we’ve had this year, the parade, which was supposed to begin at 11:30am, was first postponed until 12:30pm. As radar proved the rain wasn’t about to stop, the parade was postponed again until 2:30pm. Finally, the skies began to lighten up and the rain stopped. All participants began to gather at Avocet Subdivision, where they were guided to their “spot” in line with the rest of the floats, trucks, golf carts – whatever vehicle was registered. Everyone was dressed up and all floats were brightly decorated to the Mardi Gras theme of “Heros & Villains.” The parade began between 2:30 and 3:00pm, slowly proceeding

From the Lighthouse Krewe

We would like to thank all the people that helped make this year’s Mardi Gras Parade possible with the adverse conditions we were having…the constables office and sheriff deputies, the merchants that help as sponsors, all the great participants that stayed with us through a three hour storm delay and all the great people that got the word out about the delay on starting the parade. Thank you all.

Update on condition of our beloved Jerry Valentine by Brenda Cannon Henley

Our hearts were saddened on Saturday to learn that Pastor Jerry Valentine, who has been battling cancer for some months, fell in his home and hurt his chest area as he landed across or onto his recliner. He was rushed by ambulance to UTMB to be checked over concerning the fall.

Debbie and Jerry were originally told that he had abscesses in the stomach cavity, but that diagnosis was later changed to reflect that what was first thought to be abscesses was actually more tumors growing there and causing extreme pain.

Not only was Jerry in pain from the tumors and the fall in his home, his body

Do we teach children, or reading, writing, and arithmetic?

(A friend sent this writing to me and I was attracted to the truth it shared.)

(Feb-21-2012) She stood in front of her 5th grade class on the very first day of school, she told the children an untruth. Like most teachers, she looked at her students and said that she loved them all the same. However, that was impossible, because there in the front row, slumped in his seat, was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard.

Mrs. Thompson had watched Teddy the year before and noticed that he did not play well with the other children, that his clothes were messy and that he constantly needed a bath. In addition, Teddy could be unpleasant. It got to the point where Mrs. Thompson would actually take delight in marking his papers with a broad red pen, making bold X’s and then putting a big ‘F’ at the top of his papers.

At the school where Mrs. Thompson taught, she was

Are you a Collector?

(Feb-21-2012) Are you a collector? Do you always see just one more thing you “need” to add to your collection? Well, join my club. When I fall in love with something, I have a hard time stopping and I really hate to hide my treasures. Here on Bolivar we can find treasures to collect every day. I would love to see some pictures of yours.

Welcome…

(Feb-14-2012) Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone! I hope this day finds you in good spirits. I want to say Happy Valentine Day to my best friend and husband of 40 years! Love you Jim!

The heart is the symbol of love in our culture. Another way the word is used is if someone says to you “Have a heart” you are asking them to be kind and sympathetic. One thing about living on Bolivar is that I have not met one person that did not have a heart! People here on the Peninsula are always ready to help and all it takes is to ask or for someone to find out you are in need and you will be surprised at the people that rally to your aide. Thank you friends for always “Having a heart” when I need you and being the soul of Bolivar! This article…

Winter on the beach

(Feb-14-2012) I’m hoping, after 35 degree days, that this is the end of Winter, please! We had company this weekend, planned it for many weeks, and thank goodness it wasn’t raining, but Geez, could it be any colder? That’s okay, we wouldn’t let a little cold weather bring us down. We drove from Rollover back to Crystal Beach along the shore to collect firewood in the old pick up truck. My husband is pretty picky. He rejects about half of what I pick up – too wet, too big, too small. We actually found so much wood, we stopped…
