Balance first impressions with good judgment

Seeing a sign while Ted and I were driving through Bridge City on Sunday brought a smile to my lips and a story to my mind. We passed a service station with the prices of gasoline advertised as well as a portion of the sign that read “NOMEX” in very large letters.

The very first Monday morning that I lived in Texas,

Just Hanging Around

The Beach Homes we are building today are sometimes smaller than we would like. With prices rising on building our homes, using creative ways to get the most Bang for your Buck is more important than ever. I love this room because it shows how you can get a King sized bed in a smaller room and have additional storage. You could have something like this built with doors on the top two levels to

Big party at the Big Red Barn

The Big Red Barn was the setting for this year’s Crab Festival Volunteers’ Appreciation Party. A big THANKS was given to all the volunteers that helped make the 2012 Texas Crab Festival a success. “Without volunteers, there would not be a Crab Festival,” Chamber of Commerce President Mac McDonald told the crowd. The Crab Festival is the Showcase event for Bolivar Peninsula, and next year

BOOM! It’s that time again, all 11 days of it.

This is Dick and Debbie Lambing from Lufkin, camping out on their prime property on Hwy 87 at Holiday Beach. In early December 2011, they bought the fireworks business from Lafons and began selling fireworks. They own two highway properties in Crystal Beach, and have nine trailers loaded with the latest pyrotechnic delights.

Fishing Report & Tide Chart For Rollover Pass, TX June 25 – July 1, 2012

By Ed Snyder/Outdoors

Summary- The wet, weedy, and windy conditions for the first part of the week stalled the bite but turning tides soon cleaned the pass greatly improving the fishing action.  Speckled trout was still the #1 item for anglers, with reds, croaker, and flounder filling the void.

Bird Island, Alaska

Our first PDF on Alaskan birds is from the southern site of Homer, on a small island many tourists visit.

Hope you enjoy it!

OK…Mosquitos

by Kelly Moad
Many know that the Texas State Bird is the Mockingbird…or is it the Mosquito? It’s hard to tell sometimes, even at the beach. We all love the beach, and mosquitoes do too. Water is a necessary part of the mosquito’s habitat, and the Peninsula has plenty of water spots for a mosquito family to call home! So how do we protect against them while

50 lb black drum caught

Matthew Moore caught this huge 50 lb., 45 in. black drum off East Canal Street.

Monday morning

Yes, I’m retired, but Monday still seems like a day at work…and that’s not a bad thing. This Monday morning, as I sit at my computer writing stories for tomorrow’s publication of CBLN, I’m reminded of all those Monday mornings I would stumble into work after a busy fun-filled weekend at the beach, sitting down at my desk and feeling the relaxation of not having to do anything but sit and stare at

Concealed Handgun Class, July 1

From Murphy Bowers:
Yes folks, demand has been high again for another class. I have got Dad coming July 1st from 8am to 6 pm. It will be held at the Port Bolivar Fire Dept. and our shooting will be done also in Port Bolivar at the end of 28th St, on the other side of Marcus and Talisa. Costs is $100.00. You don’t need a gun. Dad has plenty and doesn’t mind sharing. You need 50 rounds of ammo, again if you don’t have any or can’t get to town, dad brings a lot and he is cheaper than Walmart.

Please call Murphy Bowers (409-553-1732) if you are interested or just show up!

Thank you sooo much to Malcolm, William, and Marcus Comeaux and the Port Bolivar Fire Dept for their support.

Ahoy Matey!

This room is for all of my shipmate buddies out there! When you are not on the high seas, even for the day, coming home to a place that is decorated with what you really love, almost makes being on land bearable! This room has it all. Of course the red, white and blue is a given, but the use of stripes on the wall as the main pattern is great! Now I realize many of you would never want to

A packed house for “The Wizard of ODD”

The Wizard of Odd brought in a packed house both Friday and Saturday nights! And, what an amazing show it was! Who would’ve known we had so much talent right here in Crystal Beach? The production was presented by The Way Off Broadway Ensemble Players, written, produced and directed by Linda C. Elissalde, pictured below.

GO’s Sand Bucket
by Georgia Osten
Do you know how there are still some dilapidated Ike-torn houses still standing here and there? Well, we happen to have one right in front of our house. We’ve gotten used to it because we love the owner who insists he will, one day, be able to rebuild his cabin. His father lovingly built it for

Targhe National Forest

by Jim Stephenson

Targhe National Forest is a huge acreage of mountainous forest in Idaho and states eastward. It has many faces but my favorite areas are wooded canyons, not unlike some of the famous ones we visit in SE Arizona. Birds are that of the Rocky Mountains, with some low areas of sage and intermittent grassland.

Difficulty of understanding ‘good’ and ‘bad’ pride

By Brenda Cannon Henley
My fifteen-year-old grandson and I had an interesting discussion one afternoon recently when he was visiting with me in my home. Papa Ted was in Amarillo taking care of some business and Brendan asked me about the word “pride.” From our conversation and giving the subject some thought, I have decided that it is indeed a difficult word to completely understand and control, and an even more difficult one to explain to a teen who was genuinely interested in knowing the answers to his
