Laugh, Chuckle, Cry

Culture comes roaring into our little community in the form of a Dinner Theater of all things! I think I had one of the best seats in the house. The Dixie Swim Club performed a wonderfully sweet play on Saturday night. Held in the banquet room at Barefoot Bill’s, dinner, wine and excellent entertainment … what more could you ask for?? To top it off, the setting was a beach house in the Outer Banks of North Carolina! I mean, every book I’ve been reading for the past 20 years is set in this area. And the Southern Drawl was perfect, they talked so slow, my husband wasn’t asking me every 2 minutes “what did she say?”

The acting was over the top. Sheree was the team leader, who constantly offered her awful health food snacks, which each would spit in the pot plant. Lexie, with her Va Va Va Voom figure, after the span of over 30 years, eventually had to undergo chemo and was dreading losing all her hair. Dinah, the wise cracking Georgia Attorney, told Lexie “that’s okay, that mop has been died so many times, it won’t hurt you to start over.” Vernadette, who happens to be an Adams, sister-in-law to Shirley, Anne, LuLu and Martha, had a couple of misfits for children. When asked if she would do it all over again, she states, “Yes, but I’d have different children next time.” And Jeri Neal, the ex-Nun, continues to surprise her friends, first of all by showing up pregnant by artificial insemination, and later by reaping the benefits of marrying a younger man.

As I looked around the room at several of my friends, I couldn’t help but think how true to life the story was, life is short, times with friends are valuable. And here’s a valuable lesson, next time you need to get in a group swim, which should happen often, don’t sweat the small stuff. Bathing suits?? Hey, who needs them??

GO’s Sand Bucket is only one beach bum’s journal of life at the beach, probably something each of you can relate to. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts, visions and/or feelings of just exactly what the beach means to you.
