Blast your bait to where the big fish are

by Georgia Osten
We spent many days on the beach watching our friend Hugh fishing for bull reds. He would kayak out several hundred yards, drop his bait, then kayak back in, never taking his eyes off his rod planted in the sand at the water’s edge. Well, Hugh, the latest in “getting your bait out there” has surfaced. Meet Donald Currier, the “bait shooting cowboy”.

Donald Currier with his air powered Sand Blaster Bait Caster

Currier is from Kilgore, Texas, and his bait shooter is called the Sand Blaster Bait Caster. It is a patented PVC and stainless steel air gun capable of shooting bait 300+ yards out into the water. The bait is a mullet with hook, line and sinker all frozen into a cylinder the size of the PVC barrel. Once loaded, a single 100 psi air charge propels the bait out to where the big fish are. By the looks of this contraption you would think it powers a big bang, but it’s only a poof!

Donald said he loves to fish year round, but kayaking out in the winter wasn’t his cup of tea.

Once he discovered the Sand Blaster Bait Caster, he was convinced this was the way to fish. In fact, he is so convinced that he became the Texas distributor for the product. He enjoys showing off the Bait Caster whenever he comes to the beach. Donald travels with plenty of fishing gear and a generator powered freezer to keep the extra frozen baits.

Manufactured by a Pennsylvania company, BunkerUp Fishin, the Sand Blaster Bait Caster sells for about $900.

We tried to talk Donald into coming to the Crab Festival to show his fantastic fishing gun and he got a little excited, hopefully we lured him. Poof, let the fishing begin!

I made a bait cannon and used it on the Galveston shore. Called the Galveston Office of the Texas Department of Natural Resources (or something like that). After several hours of my call they got back to me and said that as long as it is powered by compressed air it is legal. It works very well and without wind 100 PSI will shoot a 4 oz weight out more than 200 yards. Just be sure that there are not any boats within range. I used it in Colorado yesterday and I came too close to a boat that was about 300 yards offshore.

Does this mean that air powered bait-cannons are legal in Texas? My husband built one but some neighbors have been telling us that they thought they were illegal in Texas.
