There’s nothing like a family gathering down at the beach

It always justifies why we had to add on another bedroom shortly after the “Ike-rebuilding.” Family and friends began arriving early Friday to set up for the BBQ Cook Off in Bolivar. It was a non-sanctioned cook off, but my son-in-law needed a boost to the ol’ ego. Two years ago, he took 3rd in Beans, 2nd in Ribs and 1st in Brisket. Since then, he cooks all over Texas in some very high dollar cook offs, but lately, he just hasn’t been placing in any of them. That’s okay, he had plenty of moral support this year, including a mother-in-law to brag about him, not to mention taking up space in his precious coolers with homemade cupcakes. Poor guy, mother-in-laws can be so exasperating.

We spent the majority of the weekend out there, only to come home in the evenings to shower and cool off. Played plenty of washers, drank a few refreshments and ate plenty of bar-b-que. Wait, what’s a BBQ without jello shots? The live auction could have cost PJ a fortune. You see, my daughter talks with her arms and hands, she almost got pinned with a $750 bid. “C’mon Batgirl, aren’t you going to buy anything??”

PJ managed to take 2nd in Brisket – just the boost this cooker needed. Many more cook offs in our future – Where did I put the Tums??

GO’s Sand Bucket is only one beach bum’s journal of life at the beach, probably something each of you can relate to. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts, visions and/or feelings of just exactly what the beach means to you.
