The last big weekend of the summer

It started out a little wet, but the sun worshipers and the beach lovers peeked out whenever the sun did. If you’re a “local,” you may have noticed the ol’ place looking back to normal, especially since school started and especially during the week. On several days, as I’ve taken my walk, there hasn’t been anyone on the beach – hardly any traffic either. I’m sure this is partly due to the fact that we haven’t had a lot of beach due to some sort of disturbance and high tides.

I wasn’t really looking forward to this weekend due to the crowds. I know we are a tourist community and the business owners thrive on the summer season and the tourists to carry them through the winter months. Heck, we used to be one of those businesses. We had a small convenience store here in town. The success of our business during the summer would carry us over until the next summer. We would be exhausted when Labor Day Weekend was over, then we’d relax and be lazy. But come May and Memorial Day Weekend, we were excited by the crowds and we’d be ready to get after it again!

I must admit, we checked out this weekend. We made it through church on Sunday, but then, we gathered up the family dog and our overnight bags and barged in on our kids in the League City/Pearland area. A lovely evening was spent with family and friends, we didn’t go anywhere, just stayed home and played games and celebrated one of the “Old Timers” Birthday. By Monday morning, we were up, rested, and ready to head on back home.

Once back at home, we couldn’t wait to take the golf cart out to the beach just to see what was going on. What a pleasant surprise, calmness – lots of people, but it was one of those family holidays we, as locals, love to see.

We hope you all had a safe and joyous Labor Day Weekend and we hope to see you back next summer. We’ll leave the light on for you!
