(May-1-2012) If you are like most of us that have built or rebuilt our beach houses since Ike, our beach house furnishings have evolved into an accumulation of pieces we have found or have had for a long time. We look at that old table we had and say to ourselves, hum, maybe that table can be painted for the beach house. Like in this picture, all the pieces in this bedroom are older or second hand pieces of furniture. A coat of paint in the rooms color palette pulls this space together. Using two colors on opposite ends of the color spectrum makes it as fresh as the sea and sunshine in this room.
The sheer curtains are beautiful and I can see them blowing in the wind this Spring. Yes, those two weeks a year we have of spring, when the weather is dry and there is a cool breeze. If you are building a beach house now, I love the wood walls shown in this room. They make me think of a sleeping porch that was enclosed or a North Atlantic Summer home. The freshness of this room makes you feel like waking up every morning for that walk on the beach!
I am not sure if many of you have seen the “new” accessories of silver seashells. I saw this bowl of seashells and it was over $100. Nope not for me! To get this look there are two ways to go about it! First you must have the shell, starfish coral etc. that you want to use.
Make sure they are very clean and dry. One way to get this look is using some of the metallic spray paint that is available now. Use it to spray the silver onto the shells and don’t forget to spray both sides. To make them look a little more natural, I would use the silver Rub and Buff that you can get at most craft stores. It is a waxy paste with intense color. I have used it to change the color or frames and it is really beautiful. Even after using the spray paint a little Rub and Buff will highlight the different shapes. If you are going to use Rub and Buff alone, it goes a long way. Rub the color on the shell until it is completely covered. Then take a soft dry cloth and buff it until it shines. Either approach will give you excellent results and you will get many compliments. Make sure you tell them “I did it myself”! Web site for Beach Décor: http://www.homeatsea.com
Hope to hear from all of you soon and please let me know if there is something specific that you are interested in. Enjoy your summer!
