Leaving for Australia

by Erinn Berge
Mckail Ochoa sent me a nice note this past Saturday and I thought I would share it with you. At the time of writing it, they were in transit to the airport. By now, Mckail and Kailey are already in Australia representing the Bolivar Peninsula, Texas United States for their track and field competition. This experience couldn’t have been handed to two more deserving young ladies.

“Hey Mrs. Erinn! I’m sitting here at the computer at my grandmas in Mt. Belvieu. I am very excited for tomorrow…but I don’t think it has completely sunk in just yet…it will when I get to the airport though! Thank you to everyone again who donated to Kailey and I! It means the world to me! I will have enough fun for all of us!”

Thank you Mckail and Kailey! You’re genuine enthusiasm and young spirit have been an inpiration to a lot of us. We look forward to pictures of your trip.

We are Austrailia bound

The girls did it!  They reached their goal of $9000 in just 6 weeks.  Thank you community, please read their thank you’s below.  And visit our youtube video regarding how it all happened!

Kailey’s Thank You

My incredible adventure began in January of 2012 when I recieved my invitation to run for Down Under Sports in Australia.  It was a great honor to be two of the ten to represent Texas.  As Mckail and I “began” to look at the amount of money needed to make our dream come true, we realized we couldn’t do it alone.

So, we reached out to members of each congregation and God took over.  He sent us two incredible women; Gerry Lang and Erinn Berge.  Together, with our families support, the work began.  They encouraged us to speak with our own church families and helped us reach out to this amazing peninsula.  I can’t begin to describe how proud I am to represent my community, my church and my school.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and everyone of you from the bottom of my heart for your support.  We couldn’t have done it without you.  All I have to say is “IT IS A GOD THING”.  We leave July 1 and return July 9.

Mckail’s Thank You

As of Saturday, April 21, Kailey and I have reached our goal of $9000.00 to compete in the International Track Meet in Australia with Down Under Sports.  The community pushed us over the top with our final bake sale and photography sale at the Gulf Coast Market.  I would like to express my gratitude and appreciation to everyone who has helped Kailey and I reach our goal,  We began thinking this would have to be some kind of miracle to reach the $9000.00, but by the grace of God and everyone who had donated their time, cakes for bake sales, and money (from nickles an dimes to $1000.00, we as a community and town have raised the goal.  I want to personally thank Mrs. Erinn Berge,  Mrs. Gerry Lang,  Sarah Standridge, John MIchael Reynolds for making the youtube video.  Thank you to CrystalBeachLocalNews.com, The Beach Triton, and Cumulus for keeping the community informed.  Thank you Guideaux, Stingeree, and Port Bolivar Volunteer Fire Station for letting us use your facilities.   Mrs. Tucker, good ole Kailey Tucker, my parents (Casey and Steven), my sister, Blaine and brother Seth.  Most importantly Jesus. Without Him and the power of prayer we wouldn’t have reached our goal.  Thank you for helping us accomplish this so we can compete in Australia.

$8000 raised to date

The “Down Under Girls” aka Kailey and Mckail are holding their breath as they near their goal of $9000. To date they have raised $8000!! Can you believe it? In just the past few weeks, these girls have grown so much from your generous donations and support. Not only are they starting to get a close to their final goal, but some other wonderful life experiences have occurred. Hard work followed up with discipline, commitment and learning about team work have made this journey unforgettable.

Visit Kailey at her new job at Guideaux! She is diligently working the back end gathering all the best ingredients for your yumaliscious pizza or sub. This girl is the definition of excellence as she works part time at Guideaux’s and is a full time high school junior. A naturally talented photographer, she recently won an award at the Texas State Fair.  Oh, and not to mention that she is on The track and field team at school and, you will also see her at the Bayvue Church choir. Now, with your support, she is so close to fulfilling her dream of going to Australia.

The other strong player of this Down Under Duo is Mckail. She has started her new job at Latitude 29.2 Surf shop. A gifted eye for photography and artistic flair, she is overflowing with style. Stop by and see her! Additionally, Mckail is also a full time high school junior who was just awarded first place with teammate Vicki T. in Girls Doubles Tennis! She and her teammates are going to regional! Congratulations McKail and team.

The girls are very blessed to have this opportunity.  Fundraising has been an excellent tool to help hone their skills in marketing, advertising, public speaking, and accountability.  This chance of going abroad had taught them about teamwork and dedication.  Underlying and throughout, faith has brought all of us through.

Now, I can’t think of any other students who are more deserving of this opportunity.  I can’t tell you what pride I have to live is such a community that raises their kids up for this kind of chance.  Thank you Bolivar Peninsula and thank you, God, for all of your unique blessings. :)

UP NEXT, be on the look out for the down under old time protrayal of how it all happened!
