A humbling experience

It’s been a wild September for hurricanes – Harvey, Irma, Jose, Katia, Lee & Maria is out there churning up some waves as we speak. We slipped unscathed from Harvey, but our neighbors to the South did not. We got a really ugly part of it though. We decided to stay, and as it turned out, I’m glad we did. If there had been a 15-foot storm surge predicted, we would have evacuated. Where would we have gone? Well, Pearland or League City of course. Maybe Beaumont, Port Arthur, Orange? Geez, they’re still recovering. We, in Bolivar, have folks evacuating from their houses in those areas to their beach houses while their homes are being restored.

We did get some eye-opening conditions we’re not used to. I must say, it’s been a humbling experience. As a precaution, we bought bottled water, and stocked up on canned goods. Good thing! Our area was placed under a Boil Water Stage 4 situation. We lost electricity for over 25 hours. Fire Departments from other cities came to our rescue, staying in our town for the past 3 weeks. Trucks came through with water, baby supplies, bleach, ice, you name it. We’ve been on a strict water conservation as well, no watering agriculture, no yard sprinklers, no auto/boat washing.
After 10 days, the Boil Water restriction was lifted, we can go back to using water as we always have.

A humbling experience, indeed. I guess that’s what it takes every now and then to realize how privileged we are.

The Burn Ban is still in effect.
