Bolivar Lighthouse Krewe 2010 King Larry Skiles & Queen Bekki Salling
HAPPY MARDI GRAS!!
WOW! What a week. Beautiful weather warm enough to walk on the beach a
few days this week. Then the cold and rain again for the next few
days. But that still didn't put a damper on the 2010 Bolivar
Lighthouse Krewe Mardi Gras Ball held last Saturday, Jan. 30th at
Coconut's. The 2009 King, Jerry Mittendorf and Queen Tangy Atwood gave
way to the reigning 2010 King & Queen, Larry Skiles and Bekki
Salling. Remember to join in the celebration at the Bolivar Peninsula
Mardi Gras on February 13th, 2010. The
2010 Court of the Lighthouse Krewe is Mavis Hunstiger, Lois Riley,
Bobbey White, Terry Molloy; Jerry Mittendorf, Jim Salling, George
Strong and Ed Riley

Are you a "big
picture" person?
Who but God goes up to
the heaven and comes back down? Who holds the wind in his fist? Who wraps up
the oceans in his cloak? Who has created the whole wide world? What is his
name~and his son's name? Tell me if you know! Proverbs 30:4 NLT
Impressive panorama
When people understand events clearly, we often say
that they "see the big picture." This passage in Proverbs makes the
point that the clearest view of the "big picture" will always include
God. The sequence of rhetorical questions helps us consider the awesome
identity and capacity of God. Much like the litany of questions that God
showered on Job (Job 38:1-41:34), these push us toward humble and silent
worship.
Agur was feeling overwhelmed (30:1), insignificant
(30:2), and limited (30:3). But when he turned away from his smallness to
contemplate God's greatness, an atmosphere of confidence filled the rest of the
chapter. He began with a little picture, no bigger than himself, but he soon
looked at the big picture and forgot that he was weary and worn out. God gave
him a new and refreshing point of view.
WISE WAYS One of the best
remedies for a weary and tired spirit is to contemplate the majesty and greatness
of God. How have you found that to be true?
Dear Lord, when I look at all you have made, I know
it makes me feel smaller, but it also fills me with wonder over how great you
are! I worship you.

Response from
TxDot to a local Bolivar residence...
Thank
you for your email regarding SH 87, which was forwarded to my office for
handling. Your concerns for the roadways in GalvestonCounty
are important to us at the Texas Department of Transportation. We are aware of
the issues that persist on SH 87 and continue to actively take measures to
alleviate them.
We have completed the construction of a temporary revetment, which prevents
some of the high tides from encroaching onto the roadway. It is our hope
that over time, this revetment will help to re-establish the dune line. We are
also in the process of raising the roadway in various locations to bring it to
an elevation that is outside the limits of most normal tides.
These efforts have and will provide some level of protection to SH 87, but were
never intended to prevent every high tide event from encroaching onto the
roadway. As conditions permit, we will continue to clean and reshape the
roadside ditches and outfall channels. We have been hampered in these efforts
by the recent wet weather and delays obtaining easements for the outfalls.
Although a developer expressed interest previously in relocating a portion of
SH 87 further inland, it does not appear that plan will come to fruition.
We are also working in conjunction with the County of Galveston
for further improvements to the SH 87/SH 124 intersection. The County has
received a grant which will help provide some of the funding necessary to raise
and protect this intersection. They are currently in the initial design
phase of this project.
Please contact me at any time for further updates on this progress at the below
address, as I will be happy to address it in a timely and courteous manner.

Friendswood & the BolivarPeninsula
Two boys were walking home from Sunday school after hearing
a strong preaching on the devil. One said to the other, 'What do you think
about all this Satan stuff?'
The other boy replied, 'Well, you know how Santa Claus
turned out. It's probably just your Dad.'
A
production company from Los Angeles,
California visited Bolivar Peninsula this
day. One might have thought someone was
having an awful big party over there in Port Bolivar. But no, this time our local police enforcement was on the scene making sure all was safe while the production
company filmed a commercial for a Chevrolet Silverado.
The
area from 23rd to 21st and from Front
St. to Keystone in Port Bolivar was filled with vehicles and about
40 individuals associated with this filming crew. Part of the commercial involved dumping sand from dump trucks from Santa Fe area. The actual commercial
was filmed on Keystone St. between 22nd and 23rd Streets and featured
the Benny Jones' family's new home.
This
commercial is scheduled to air during the Winter
Olympics. While you are watching the Olympics in the next few months, see if you can spot Bolivar in the commercial. Their location producer was thrilled with the
area and is scouting the Peninsula for
areas suitable for other shoots.

Women stand by Bolivar to very end
By Tom Linton Published January 25, 2010
Women on BolivarPeninsula seem to have
always been and continue to be imbued with a "never say die" attitude.
Cajun in Hell
A Cajun died and went to hell. The devil assigned him the usual
punishment. He put him in the mass pit
where the heat was melting others. The devil came back sometime
later surprised to find the Cajun just sitting around, not even misting, much
less sweating. "How come you're not so much as sweating here where
everyone else is screaming for relief from the heat?"
The Cajun laughed and said, "Man, I was raised in the
bayous of Sout Looziana. Dis ain't nothin' but May in Morgan City to me!"
The devil decided to really put the Cajun through it. He put him
in a sealed off cave in the pit with open blazes and four extra furnaces
blasting. When he came back, days later, the Cajun was sitting pretty,
had barely begun to bead up with sweat. The devil was outraged. "How
is this possible!? You should be melted to a shrieking puddle in
these conditions!."
The Cajun laughed even harder than before. "Hey,
man! I don tole you. I was raised in Sout Looziana. You tink dis
is heat?! Dis ain't nothin' but August in CowIsland
!"
So the devil thought, 'Alright, a little reverse ought to do the
trick.' He put the Cajun into a corner of hell where no heat ever
reached. It was freezing and to add to the Cajun's misery, he added
massive icebergs and blasting frozen air. When he returned, the
Cajun was shivering, ice hung from every part of him but he was grinning
like it was Christmas. Exasperated, the devil asked
"HOW!? How is it possible?! You're impervious to heat
and here you sit in conditions you can't be used to...freezing cold and
yet you're happier than if you were in heaven. WHY?!"
The Cajun kept grinning and asked, "Don't dis mean de
Saints won da Super Bowl?"
