Bambino

I am beginning to think I am writing the Day-Tripper reports. But, what this is all about is Pictures! Going through all the years of pictures, I have new stuff to write about, such as, Bambino. A really fun trip was when Dianne, our first born, and I took off down River Road visiting old plantations. This is a three day fun trip; from here you head to Baton Rouge, and just before you get to the bridge, turn onto LA 1. This takes you along the Mississippi River all the way to New Orleans. There are many homes and gardens to tour and at any time you are ready for a bed, you can jump back onto I-10 for Baton Rouge for a reasonable hotel or motel. Many of these homes have B&B’s and wonderful restaurants where you can stay too. The first town is Plaquemine and the beautiful home called Nottoway, then Homas House, Oak Alley and all the way just outside of New Orleans is Destrehan Plantation. I have taken this trip three times and loved every minute of each trip.

This first trip was almost 20 years ago, when Di was carrying our second Granddaughter, Emily. We took off on a Friday morning early and were at Nottoway Plantation just as they opened the doors. We toured about 4 or 5 houses along the river and enjoyed a ferry ride across the river on a very small barge ferry. By the afternoon she was getting tired so off we went back to Baton Rouge, had dinner a Ralph & Kacoo’s, if you have never been there try it. Next morning off we go again, we skipped a few houses along the way as we were spending the night in New Orleans with friends.

CB_2017-0207-2Saturday night was a parade put on by the Italian American Marching Club. This coincides with St. Patrick Day and St. Joseph Day when you get two saints together you of course have a parade. Anyway, back to the parade … all the floats are decorated in red, green and white and there are lots of beads to be had too. As the parade began, Di looked a little sad, so I asked why? Well Mom, who is going to throw beads to a very pregnant lady? I said, “I think every one of those good looking Italian men will.” You see all the riders on the floats are with their baby daughters, and about that time one of the beautiful men dressed in a tux grabbed her and said “BAMBINO”. He then started placing beautiful beads around her neck, this started all the men on his float to gather around my daughter and before the night was over she could barely stand for all the beads.

MOM! WOW! What a fun night! Who knew!! Don’t you just love that look on your child’s face when all is well.

Anyway, if you get a chance, try this trip for something to do when you are bored with winter. The crowds in New Orleans are not as bad as when Mardi Gras is in full swing.
