Crystal Beach: Beachgoers sad to see BP tar balls

BOLIVAR PENINSULA—Residents and visitors at Crystal Beach on the Bolivar Peninsula wondered where the tar balls came from and now they know.

http://www.khou.com/home/BP-tar-balls-wash-up-on-Crystal-Beach-97818689.html

BP Oil hits the Bolivar Peninsula broadcast live at 5 and later at 10 by Houston's Channel 11.   Tiffany Craig, reporter for the CBS Houston affiliate Channel 11, spent her day on Monday following up on reports of tar balls on the Crystal Beach near the Bluewater sub-division.  Follow up tests conducted by the Coast Guard confirmed that the tar balls found were from the BP Deepwater Horizon disaster.  While the recent Hurricane Alex helped stir the gulf up a bit, tar balls were hard to find expect for on your feet or beach footwear.  The residents of the Bolivar Peninsula are hopeful that nothing more than an occasional tar ball will not stop beach go-ers from enjoying the otherwise great summertime fun along this special part of the Texas Coast.  Follow up visits to the beach on Tuesday and Wednesday did not show any more tar balls.

Following Hurricane Alex sending excessively high tides, having the only road into Bolivar closed due to flooding and debris filling SH 87, and many businesses closed last week, vacationeers and residents alike reported oil residues on Crystal Beach.

How Bad Could Gulf Spill Get?

Jason Volentine KIAH; 9:19 PM CDT, June 1, 2010

Everyone knows BP's "top kill" failed and the newest attempt to stop the leak has been given a "slight" chance of success. Now, attention is slowly turning to a worst case scenario.

Now, attention is slowly turning to a worst case scenario. The only tried and true method of stopping the leak is a relief well, or kill well, that won't be ready until August. Based on spill estimates, if the leak continues at its current rate that would mean as much as 120 million gallons of oil in the Gulf two months from now.

Forget the Ike Dike, let’s
improve building methods

By JOHN S. JACOB

May 26, 2010, 11:41PM

In “Why the ‘Ike Dike' is still a good idea” (Page B10, May 2), William Merrell eloquently made the case for a large scale “Ike Dike” that would run 50-some miles from the San Luis Pass to High Island on the north. For the highly urbanized Houston/Galveston region it is not a question of if, but when the next big hurricane will strike. It is also important to note that for all its devastation, Ike would have caused incredibly more damage had it hit our “sweet spot” to the southwest. We really do need to think about planning for the future.
