Certainly the greatest change point of history

BrendaBy Brenda Cannon Henley
Easter is a time when all Christians the world over think of the Lord Jesus Christ, His life, His ministry, and of the crucifixion on the cross. I realize that I write for people of many faiths and that we all perhaps do not believe the same, I cannot help but think of Easter and spring and new birth and the joys of living at this time of the year. I ask that our readers bear with me as I look at the death, burial, and resurrection as I have been taught down through the years and as I believe in my heart. Let me state clearly that I am open to hearing what you believe and that I have many dear friends of other faiths. We can love each other, help each other, and grow together.

All four of the gospels given in Scripture record the events of the trial of Jesus, His sentence, His death and burial in the borrowed tomb, and of His resurrection, which is considered the cornerstone of the Christian faith. I have read these accounts many times and taught the lesson on many levels and to different ages of students. I am always amazed at some new detail I learn with each perusal of the verses. In reading the familiar passages this year, I especially watched for the reaction of the disciples of Jesus, His closest followers. I think we have been very hard on them over the years. Remember, they had left everything to follow Him for the most part and they truly believed what He had said. I read one commentary that indicated they were fearful for their own lives, they wanted Jesus to be anointed the King at that exact time, and that they were confused and tattered at what appeared to be shattered plans and dented dreams.

Reading in Mark, Chapter 16, we see the account of Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James as they came to the tomb bringing spices to anoint His body. They came early in the morning and were concerned as to how they would roll the sealing stone from the mouth of the grave. When they arrived, they saw it gone. When they entered the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side wearing a white robe. Scripture tells us they were amazed. The young man spoke and said, “Be not amazed. Jesus, the Nazarene, who hath been crucified, is not here. He has risen. See the place where they laid Him.” The ladies were instructed to go and tell His disciples that Jesus was not there in the borrowed tomb.

Verse 9 tells us that Jesus appeared to Mary Magdalene, his faithful follower who had been last at the cross and first at the tomb. He told Mary to go and tell His disciples that He was alive as He said He would be. I taught a lesson where I contended this is the greatest message ever given to any human being. It is, in fact, the greatest change point or central truth to the Christian faith. If Jesus did not rise from the dead, then the Scripture is simply not true and we believe a lie. But, according to this Scripture, and many others, He did indeed rise and is alive in Heaven today where he intercedes for us on the right hand of the Father.

Happy Easter and happy forever after. I ask one question — What if we are correct and this is exactly what happened? Would that not be worthy of your investigating and trusting Christ for your own salvation? Easter, the time of new birth and being alive, is a wonderful time to commit our lives anew to the Christ of the borrowed tomb.
