County Judge meets with Driftwood Homeowners

driftwood-0The Driftwood Subdivision Homeowners Association invited County Judge Mark Henry to their annual meeting on Saturday to meet with the property owners and to discuss issues that affect Bolivar Peninsula. Also attending was Clayton Comeaux, Bolivar Road & Bridge Supervisor. HOA President Everett Johnson welcomed Judge Henry and Mr. Comeaux, then asked the judge to comment on his five-year vision for Bolivar. Henry was quick to mention that his highest priority is the elevating of Hwy 87. The County will continue to work closely with TXDot to make sure the work on this vital evacuation route is completed.

Another question was posed regarding the length of time a person is allowed to “camp” on the beach. In some cases, camping turns into living, and there is no restriction for extended stays on the beach. Judge Henry agreed with the concern, but use of the beach is regulated by State law and the County has no ordinance power to regulate beach use in unincorporated areas.

One resident expressed a concern regarding lack of enforcement for properties overgrown and not maintained. Judge Henry replied this is an issue for the Nuisance Abatement Office, and mentioned that nuisance abatement is complaint driven. You must call in order to alert the office to action. Another resident, however, said repeated calls were unanswered and the office was slow to respond. Henry agreed to look into the matter.

Judge Henry was asked about the practice of people roping off sections of the beach for private use. This is occurring more frequently, especially during busy weekends. The judge indicated he would talk to the Sheriff’s office about this practice.

Mr. Comeaux spoke about the new restrooms to be installed near the beach. One permanent restroom facility and three mobile restroom facilities are planned, to be completed by next spring. There will also be stand-up showers installed in some areas. These facilities will be paid for by the parking sticker fund.

Driftwood would like to thank Judge Henry along with Mr. Comeaux for attending the Driftwood meeting. Many topics were addressed and discussed and hopefully results will be seen. When we work together as a community and neighborhood, great improvements can be accomplished.
