Donald Bayard Cherry

Donald Bayard Cherry, 79, of Austin died October 11, 2013 after a brief illness. He was born August 22, 1934 to Hazel Bowen Cherry and Bayard “Doc” Cherry of Toledo, Ohio. After the Army and graduation from University of Toledo, Don married Jane Bauman, joining NASA in the procurement division where he worked throughout the golden age of space exploration. Don was an adventurous and athletic man his entire life. He climbed Mount Fuji, ran the Boston Marathon in 3:21, and toured France by bicycle.

He retired to the Bolivar Peninsula, through the donation of his house the Bolivar Cultural Foundation was formed. After Hurricane Ike, he relocated to Austin where he met and married Afton Pomerleau. Don was active in his church and his involvement was not limited to Sundays. He could often be found mowing the church’s lawn, landscaping and doing odd jobs.

Don is survived by his wife, Afton Pomerleau Cherry; children, Deborah Lee Cherry Maney of Austin, David Bayard Cherry, and granddaughter, Cecilia Cherry of Houston; his sisters and brothers, Jane Malte, Nancy Magerl, Joel P. Cherry and Jonathan B. Cherry; as well as five stepchildren, and their children.
A memorial service was held at Memorial United Methodist Church, 6100 Berkman in Austin on Saturday, October 26th.
