Garden Improvements

A few mild days in August, escaping the heat, had a lot to do with undertaking the weeding project I’ve been neglecting for over a year. With Spring approaching, and all the “snake” stories, I was feeling less and less inclined to reach into that garden. I did remove a huge piece of driftwood that I was sure would be a great hiding place for such critters. Then, I left it alone.

I actually approached a lady who does landscaping for a friend of mine. She took one look at this overgrown patch and declined my offer to pay her to clean it out for me. She declined tackling my vegetable garden as well. I began to feel pretty let down. If you know anything about growing stuff here on the peninsula, you will realize we have some pretty rich soil. Let me clarify, anything will grow in our sandy environment.

The other day, being made to feel guilty about the condition of said garden, I grabbed the shovel and began digging out piles of weeds. Some shrubbery had to be totally unearthed to remove all the grass and prickly stuff growing within. Hopefully, we saved the gardenia – she’s been replanted.

Feeling sorry for me, my husband joined me the second day, thank goodness. We managed to clear out three huge bags, plus a garbage can, plus a yard wheel barrow full of weeds and junk from the garden. As we worked, my husband told me at least 3 golf carts passed by saying “it’s about time.” This made me so mad, I dug even harder. Geez, he sure knows how to work me!

GO’s Sand Bucket is only one beach bum’s journal of life at the beach, probably something each of you can relate to. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts, visions and/or feelings of just exactly what the beach means to you.
