Great job, beach crews

beachrake-0After two summers of mostly seaweed free beaches, a large influx of Sargassum weed invaded Bolivar recently. Although nothing like the mountains of seaweed that came ashore in 2014, it did make its presence known. Trash and debris come ashore with the weed, leaving the beach dirty and foul smelling. County crews jumped into action last week to begin cleaning it up. With a large front end loader, huge piles of the weed were scraped up and deposited in the dune. Then the county’s newest piece of beach equipment was deployed to further groom the beach. This machine, called a Surf Rake, is designed to sift out trash and debris, leaving clean sand behind.
