Gulfway Motel has new owner

gulfway0Congratulations Dave Paresh! Dave is the new owner of Gulfway Motel in High Island. He has been in the Bolivar area since Hurricane Ike and is an experienced business owner and developer. Dave is the former owner of Swede’s Grocery in Crystal Beach and last year he purchased the former Crystal Beach fire department building where Jose’s Restaurant and several other businesses are located. Dave had his eye on the motel since the days he worked at the convenience store in High Island next-door to the motel. He told the owner to “call me if you ever decide to sell.” And late last year they called. After a few months of negotiations, Dave took ownership last week.

Dave is now remodeling an upstairs area to accommodate the Paresh family to include Dave, his wife, and two sons. He is freshening up the 34 rooms to get them ready for the upcoming season. April is the busiest birding month in High Island. And after the season, all rooms will get a complete upgrade including new furniture. The four acre property has a swimming pool and courtyard area, outdoor barbecue patio, and a full service restaurant. The restaurant will be open 7 days a week serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Dave’s future plans are to add a restaurant drive-thru, build a new website and Facebook page, and remodel the lobby with comfortable seating. Dave is keenly aware of the importance of customer service. He wants to provide a pleasing, clean, safe environment for his guests. “I want my customers happy so they will come back,” said Dave.

Congratulations Dave! Best of luck on the improvements and updates.

We were there for birding April this year. The owner at the time (?Dave) had plans for a beer garden to replace restaurant, and was hoping to get the lease (about to expire) on the convenience store and move it across the street, down a block.
Whatever came of this? So much potential; but needs a major investment.

Great News! I stayed there for a week after Hurricane Ike and it certainly needed an upgrade. Owners were very nice, but the restaurant was pretty bad. Glad to see new owners that can invest in this property as it is close to the ocean. Sometimes just don’t have money for a house, and only want to stay a few days. This will be perfect!
