It’s not easy to learn new tricks

…but it’s important the older we get.
Before retirement, I was pretty computer savvy, and I’ve had to stay up on my computer skills. I can create spread sheets, send and receive correspondence, update a website, participate in social media, various stuff like that. I do a fair job I think – I even manage to surprise my kids from time to time. I don’t know how to program a movie into the DVD, my husband wrote out specific step by step notes for that task. The last time I tried, I lost the DVD remote – it stayed lost for about 2 months. Working my smart phone is a conundrum. I can talk on the smart thing, call out, receive calls, hang up, etc. I can text and accept messages. I can take pictures and sometimes I’m successful at posting them to emails, messages or Facebook.

Lately, I’ve had to make a few trips to LaMarque – sorry if you happened to get behind me while I was stopped in the middle of the street, studying the map on my cell phone. There I was driving all through LaMarque on the south side of Hwy. 3, the streets I needed just didn’t go through, and there were those dang railroad tracks. At one point, I ended up at the Texas City Dike. Very interesting, because I’ve never been on the Texas City Dike. Later, I told my husband it might be nice to intentionally go there sometime.

Last time I went to La Marque, I had about 30 minutes to wait for Mr. Murphy to come open up his furniture repair shop, so I had a chance to play with my phone a bit. I decided to take a look at the map again and decided to “reverse” my route in hopes I wouldn’t end up on the Dike again. Lo and behold, this voice came on my phone, I call her Marge – she’s a voice from Heaven. Marge began telling me where my next turn would be to get outta there. Marge didn’t even get angry when I missed a turn, she would simply re-route me to the next possible getaway.

When I finally got back to familiar territory, I cut off Marge so I could call my daughter in California and tell her my success story. I hope I can meet up with Marge again sometime, and hope she’ll be just as patient with me next time.

GO’s Sand Bucket is only one beach bum’s journal of life at the beach, probably something each of you can relate to. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts, visions and/or feelings of just exactly what the beach means to you.
