It’s only make believe

Halloween never used to be one of my favorite holidays until the last couple of years. I happen to be in a bunco group with 11 other ladies, and my month just happens to be October. My Halloween decoration box is growing and growing. I’ve even decided to have a costume contest this year. I thought my dog should be able to adorn a costume as well. Why not, she’s stuck here with 12 screaming women for a couple of hours? Anyway, I posted a few of her possible costumes on Facebook and the remarks I received were deplorable. Things like, “oh, she looks so embarrassed” or “now, does that look like a happy dog.” Geez people, we were just having a little fun.

Then, as I was sitting here writing this story, messages kept dinging on my cell phone. Finally, after about 6 dings, I decided to get up to see what all the hubbub was. It was my youngest granddaughter playing dress-up with her littlest brother. Just like she did with her little brother a few years ago when he’d let her get away with it. Oh my goodness, the leotard and the tutu, ballet slippers, a big bow in his hair, the whole shebang. But, oh to be in her world, actually getting to play with his older sister, dancing and laughing and Mommy taking pictures.

The point I need to make here is that he really WAS having fun. My dog, Maezy, was really not having fun playing dress-up even though she had 100% of my attention. I’ll take that as a message – Maezy will not have to dress up for bunco or Trunk or Treat at The Big Store.

I do have a point to make for dear Dax, dressed up as a ballerina – Boys cannot and should not be taught how to curtsy!

GO’s Sand Bucket is only one beach bum’s journal of life at the beach, probably something each of you can relate to. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts, visions and/or feelings of just exactly what the beach means to you.
