Natchez, MS

Our family has made several trips to Natchez for their spring or fall pilgrimage. It is a short drive from here or Houston and a lovely drive at that. This is a good family trip many B&B’s, Hotels and Motels. The tours are usually four homes in a morning tour and four homes in the afternoon tour. If you have enjoyed the Galveston Mother’s Day home tours, you will love this adventure. The last time we made the pilgrimage, it was me and our two daughters. We decided to go the first weekend the pilgrimage was open, first part of March. Di was just out of high school and Rene’ was in 10th grade and off we went early one Friday morning.

It was a little chilly in Houston that morning, and as we headed north from Baton Rouge it got much colder and cloudy. Rene’ was in the front seat and said, “Mom, it is raining, I can hear it but I can’t see it?” “Yes dear.” “Mom, where is the rain?” CB_2017-0124-1“It’s not rain any more it is sleet and a little snow.” “WOW!” “Where!!” We made a pit stop at a very nice rest stop and out the door she went to see and feel. “MOM!!” “Where is it?” “Hold still child and you will feel it.” “OH!” “Can we call Daddy?” “Sure.” You see we were “uptown,” I had a mobile phone mounted on the floor. So we called Dad, he was not as excited as Rene’ or Di but he tried to share their excitement while trying to do his job.

The further we drove, the colder it got, we did not have near enough clothes for this weather, especially with the ice that was coming when we arrived in Natchez. Now, here’s the good thing about all this bad weather. The weather was so cold that week, very few people showed up for the home tour. Several of the homes on tour the girls and I were the only ones at the house for the tours, so we really received a one-on-one tour. Sometimes the tours were done by the owners of the homes as docents were unable to make it to the house. On a warmer afternoon, we toured Natchez Under the Hill, as several river boats were docked for a day. This was so long ago that they allowed us on the river boat so we could see what it was like. Sad to say that would never ever happen in this time.

There are so many shops in Old downtown Natchez, and great places to eat and a lot of fun Under the Hill.

Go out there on your .com machine and see what is happening the year.
