New Friends

When you live in a house you have neighbors that are next door for several years or many years. You know each other’s kids and grandchildren and birthdays and so on. When you make a decision to change this way of life everything changes including making new friends. As one example, we have a couple across from us from Wisconsin. They came in the first of December and are loving the weather – fog and all. Every day, the wife and her mother are out at the picnic table working on seashells they have found at the beach. Her husband found a Christmas tree for a $1 and the ladies got busy on decorating. The tree is outside next to the trailer and every night the lights are turned on and we all get to enjoy the tree. Now the difference is these ladies are having their fun decorating shells in their swimsuits and shorts and tee’s. It is all in what you are used to, this is their Spring time. I am in my new sweatshirt from Maine.

Many of our neighbors are used to moving about the country and welcome meeting new people. They have no problem walking over to a group of people and asking “can we join you?” We have not learned to do this too well yet. We have no problem speaking and introducing ourselves but we have not managed to come right out and join the party. And I must say there is a get together every weekend. Whoever starts the BBQ pit first, everyone brings something for the grill and a side dish. Even with the fog, people are out and about.

To me January and February are months to catch up on inside chores such as closets, junk drawers and dusting everything up and down. Not these folks, everyday is an adventure. RR and I are really going to need to work on this, I have a feeling we really don’t like people. We may have picked the wrong way to retire, or maybe it is not too late to learn new tricks.

Hope New Years was safe and fun for all.
