America’s Pastime
If you build it, they will come. An unforgettable line from a legendary movie. And now it’s coming to life and meaning here on our Peninsula. Peninsula Sports Park is a non-profit organization created in February 2015. Under the guidance of its Board Members Jason Warren, Delino Comeaux, Leslie Lowe, Carmen Comeaux, and Craig Ward, this group of citizens is working together to help revive and rehabilitate the little league ball field in Port Bolivar. The field was destroyed by Hurricane Ike, but now PSP has an agreement with the county to use and maintain the land for the next 20 years with an option to extend at the end of those 20 years. They plan to complete the field in early 2017 with the help of fundraising efforts to provide a regulation ball field, fences, dugouts, and stands.
The current baseball team, 10 boys, play all their games in Winnie. The Chambers County Youth Little League has been kind enough to allow our boys to participate with them over the past several years. With the restoration of our own field, we can support our teams closer to home and hopefully attract more young people on the peninsula to play baseball.
A Fish Fry Fundraiser was held on Saturday, raising over $5,000. PSP board member Leslie Lowe said, “this bring us to over 50% of our goal.” Three more fundraisers are planned to include a Flounder Tournament on Saturday, October 22 (click here for details); a Raffle for a Beretta 12 gauge shotgun will be drawn that same Saturday, October 22; and a sit down dinner and auction with live entertainment on Saturday, November 12 (more information to follow).
All contributions and donations are greatly appreciated and directly benefit our children.
