Second chances

SecondGoing_0After the first go-round, there’s always time for a second. Second Going Resale Shop has it all and it is being run by new managers from Bay Vue Methodist Church. Previously staffed by Bolivar Peninsula Community Outreach, Bay Vue members are now operating the shop to raise the money necessary to fund the mobile food unit that comes to the peninsula every Monday. The food truck distributes food to those in need in High Island, Gilchrist, Crystal Beach, and Port Bolivar.

Second Going volunteers work busy hours sorting through boxes and bags to find quality items that have much more life left in them. The shop is full of great bargains on clothes for all seasons, housewares, electronics and appliances, jewelry, and so much more. All items are inspected for stains, spots, and holes. All appliances are checked to be sure they’re in working order. Everything in good condition is priced and put out for resale. Stained clothing and other items not eligible for resale are picked up by a recycler.

Second Going even carries items such as crutches, wheel chairs, canes, and walkers free for use by residents on the peninsula. With the help of numerous caring volunteers and church members, this shop is possible. There are 100s of boxes of miscellaneous items waiting to be sorted, priced, and put out for resale each season. The shop has a massive seasonal sales to make room for all the new items. Second Going even has a quarterly ‘Quarter Sale’. Patrons line up at the door to get in and buy clothing and other goods for 25 cents. And many other household items are half off. Second Going Resale Shop, located at 1050 Bay Vue Road, is open Thursday through Saturday, 9am – 3pm, with hours extending throughout the summer rush. Don’t miss the opportunity to score some good stuff that has so much life still in it, while supporting the local needy through the mobile food unit.

Donations are gladly accepted. For those who wish to get rid of gently worn clothing and other usable items, you can drop them off during operating hours.

Thank you for this wonderful article. Second Going is such a fine place. Do come on “by and buy.”

Ideal destination spot when we all do our spring cleaning — or winter cleanup on days when we can’t get out anyway!
