Shortest day of the trip

cbyusBy Charlotte Byus
Our day was to be short and sweet. Only 175 miles to drive and watch pine trees go by. The south bound lanes of I-95 were horrible, always a long line stacked up because of construction, even on Sunday. There was one stretch the trucks, cars, and semis were lined up for at least seven miles – worse than the ferry line in July.

Just after we turned off I-95 onto I-26 heading for Columbia, SC, we had a blow-out on the 5th wheel. We heard it, but there was a semi right next to us. Seconds later, RR’s pulling over. Our traveling buddies pulled over too. Yep, there it was, our first blow-out. That is why you get road-side assistance, especially at our age. So, after I calmed down a minute, I called 800 Good Sam. RR helped me with all the information and sweet Holly said she would call us back. She told us she found someone on a Sunday afternoon to come rescue us in 60-90 minutes. Time is 1:30.

Steph & Glenn left us for a safer place to wait, just a short exit down the road at the Love’s truck stop.

At 3 pm Holly called back to let us know HELP would be a little longer. When he finally arrived, his jack would not pick up the trailer and RR was smart enough not to go to the traffic side and pick up the trailer. RR figured a way to make all that work. So, off the man goes to get the new tire from the back of his truck. HE BROUGHT THE WRONG SIZE!!!!

I walk away! It is Sunday and I do not need to think or say those thoughts!

Meanwhile, down at the Love’s truck stop, Steph & Glen were watching a soap opera. The plot: It seems a mentally-challenged young man has become angry with his family and ran away. First problem, he is trying to run with his walker. Second problem, he gets mad at the walker and throws it in the street, and when someone would not run over it he heads for the street and stomps on it. Meanwhile, a cop comes up for coffee at the truck stop, walks around the problem and heads in for that cup of Joe. Another cop comes in with lights flashing, so coffee cop, comes out to chat. Can you say Dom Deluise and Burt Reynolds Movie?

Meanwhile, back at the side of the road, with the correct tire, we head for Columbia with our traveling buds. Next stop, propane at truck stop – “sorry you will have to wait, the guy just left for a break.” Thirty minutes later – they cannot contact the guy? Don’t say a word, Charlotte, just don’t do it. Smile!!!

The shortest day of travel should have been about three hours, but nine hours later we gave up and put our heads on the pillows. Tomorrow will be a better day, I just know.
