Slam Dunk for Children’s 2017 Grand Slam Tournament

The clouds gathered and the wind blew, but for kids taking part in the CHILDREN’S TOURNAMENT sponsored by HOLTZCLAW FOUNDATION, it was a slam dunk for a Grand Slam morning. Brenda Flanagan lined everyone up and let them start fishing at 8:00 AM on the dot. Each child zoomed along the deck clutching a rod and reel donated by Stingaree. Brenda Flanagan, Brad Vratis and Christy Duhon created the Children’s Tournament in 2008. Five young folk showed up for that first attempt. Over 35 youngsters took part in the Children’s Tournament on April 29, 2017. The Bolivar Peninsula Lions Club is now in charge and recruits sponsors for this annual event that is hosted by Stingaree Restaurant.

Some are first time fishers and others are veterans of past events. However, smallest to tallest scampered back forth loudly announcing the size of their Hardhead catch. (It seems they already have those fish “tales” down pat.) Bayle Moore boasted the first catch of the day. Then the smallest tyke Piper McCreight caught her first one. Although the contest is for Hardheads, other catches are noted. Clarisse Garcia showed off a nice Sheephead. Several greedy seagulls were also hooked, but Bird Lady Patty Roznovak checked to see they were unharmed.

There was no rest for Lions Club Members. They busily baited hooks, removed catches and weighed fish until the whistle blew at 10:00 AM. All of the children were winners. Everyone received ribbons, tackle boxes, and bags of goodies. Megan Driver took home a 3rd place trophy for her 1 lb. 11 oz. catch, and Bayle Moore grabbed 2nd place with her 1 lb. 14 oz. fish. First place trophy went to Cadon Chandler for his 2 lb. leviathan. Cadon also received a $500 scholarship.

The participants were happy to rest after a full morning of fishing. They enthusiastically gobbled down their final reward of hot dogs and cold drinks.

Thanks to members of Bolivar Peninsula Lions Club, President Larry Flanagan, Holtzclaw Foundation, Brad Vratis and Stingaree Restaurant for another wonderful Children’s Tournament. These young sports eagerly await the next one in 2018. It is sure to be another Slam Dunk for a super Children’s Tournament Grand Slam!
