What’s in a name?

Tim Byrom, owner of Brint Construction, is developing a new beachside subdivision on Bolivar Peninsula on acreage he has owned for many years. Adjacent to Gulfport Village, this 27 acre plot will be developed in multiple phases, with phase I being 20 homesites, beachfront to fourth row. Although he completed the initial plans, he was lacking a name for the subdivision. His efforts to include the community in his development brought him to the students of Crenshaw School. Byrom proposed an art contest for students to come up with a name and a logo design. Rhea Raymond, Crenshaw art teacher, introduced the project to her students, and let their imaginations go. Last week the students turned in dozens of entries, and the Byroms were tasked with selecting a winner. “Pelican Point”, submitted by Jose Maldonado, was chosen as the winning name, and Stephany Doroteo’s drawing was chosen as the winning design. The name and design will be combined to create the new logo. Congratulations were given to these two young artists, along with a check for $100 each. The Byroms also donated $100 to the winning student’s class, and $200 to the Crenshaw Art Department. So now, as you drive down the highway and notice the new development, you will know the story behind the name and design.
