2017 Texas Crab Festival T-Shirt Design Contest Features Amazing Local Talent

TShirt-0Texas Crab Festival Charities is excited to announce the Winner of the 2017 Texas Crab Festival T-Shirt Design Contest. All the entries were phenomenal this year, but after much deliberation a decision was made. First Place and $100 goes to Philomena “Mena” Baldwin of Beaumont. Outstanding artwork was also submitted from Bolivar artists Ellen Simon and Patti Hagstrom. All of these amazing artists pack a whole lot of talent and experience between them. A Special THANK YOU TO ALL of our amazing 2017 artists! Original artwork will be displayed for sale at the Silent Auction booth at the Festival.

First Place Winner Mena has lived in Texas most of her life. She has always had a love for the Arts and spent much of her time drawing, playing various instruments, and crafting. She went to Louisiana State University and graduated with a major in Digital Art and minors in Art History and AVATAR (a combination of computer science and digital art). She shares her talents by teaching others Animation and Music. Mena currently works at Cocomo Joe’s as a Graphic Artist. Congratulations, Mena!

Ellen Simon creates gorgeously colorful and detailed works of art which reflect the beauty of Bolivar’s landscape and wildlife. Ellen tells us how she came to live and work as an artist here in Crystal Beach: “In 1973, my parents bought property in Ramada Beach edition. We worked for two years building a cabin to retreat to for weekends, family reunions and summer vacations.
Of course, like so many, Ike took her out. I’ve been coming to the beach so frequently, for so long, the locals thought I was a local. I started working in Crystal Beach five years ago, commuting to and from Beaumont. My fiance, Kevin Kavanagh, (aka Tiki Man) and I live and work together as artists in Crystal Beach.”

Patricia Hagstrom has been painting and exhibiting her work in the U.S and International scene for over 25 years. Her tropical theme paintings and silk screens translate our aquatic environment into a rich blend of paper and paint; her colors explode with a vibrant feel for the oceans she explores. Born in the mountains of Bradford PA, Patricia has an intuitive appreciation of nature. Her academic background began with a BS degree from Villa Maria College in Erie, PA and a BFA degree from Dominican College in Houston, TX. She then pursued her advanced art studies with a scholarship from Gonzaga University in Florence, Italy and obtained her Masters Degree from the University of Houston “ I have an obsession with the beauty of the ocean and profound affinity we have with it. With you as the viewer, I can create a visual experience. This empathy with Nature could not exist with the two of us…”
