The Watermelon Crawl Hits It Outta The Park

By Leslie Lowe
Despite the storms last week…creative minds were hard at work getting ready for the 2023 Watermelon Crawl Beach Parade for Golf Carts and Jeeps which took place Saturday benefiting Peninsula Spirts Park. This year’s parade was the largest to date and included lots of colorful, decorated vehicles including the Waterways Group who won the honor of “Parade Marshals” during our Fall Fundraiser “Party in the Park” , beautiful Mermaids, Jurassic Park Dinosaurs, a proud Military Veteran in his authentic “Willis Jeep”…machine gun and ammo included, lots of Watermelons and did I mention “Chickens”…lots of adult costumed Chickens with 2 awesome “Chicken Coups”!!!

The Chicken Coops ended up the 1st Place Golf Cart Winners, Jurassic Park took Jeep honors, and the Mermaids won Costume Bragging Rights.

The Parade ended at the beautiful Camp Margaritaville RV Resort where participants enjoyed more games and prizes, drinks, relaxing in comfy chairs, and our Silent and Live Auctions while awaiting the exciting Awards Presentation.

We would like to thank Brad Vratis & his Stingaree crew, all the Eagles, Chris and Karen Gatlin and their Tiki Beach Bar & Grill gang, Millie Murphy and the Ship’s Wheel bunch, and Camp Margaritaville led by Brad Ballard & Minh Tran for their gracious hospitality, generosity shown to our Crawlers, and continued support of Peninsula Sports Park.

A special thank you to Hollie & Randy Martin, Shauna Schroeder, Peggy Johnson, Janie Mayfield, and Lynda Cox for all your hard work and hours put in planning and executing the Crawl and to Cathie Ropp for being our BINGO Lady, our Auctioneer Col. Bill Krum, and our very special group of Parade leaders CBVFD…these guys are the best and we appreciate y’all.

All our Sponsors, generous local businesses who donated prizes and auction items, and our Registered Participants are appreciated as well, as they make this event the success it always is. The Watermelon Crawl proceeds contribute to Sports Park maintenance costs and Scholarships for local Graduates who have participated in our PSP Programs.

Peninsula Sports Park‘s baseball season will conclude this Saturday, May 6, games will begin at 11 AM at the ballfield in Bolivar. We invite everyone to attend to see what your support makes happen. Our community has joined to create athletics programs our children may enjoy right here on the Peninsula.
