A Smokin’ Good Time

BBQ_00Saturday, September 19th, the setting for the 17th Annual BBQ Cookoff – the Port Bolivar Volunteer Fire Department! The weather couldn’t have been nicer for the 29 teams to set up on Friday for the big event. Fifteen teams participated in the optional Friday night fajita competition. All day Saturday, cookers tended their pits, with the BBQ smoke wafting in the air. Hen-rietta was strutting around in the Chicken Drop box, but she made everyone wait a while before she declared the winner. Judging began at 3pm for beans, 4pm for ribs and 5pm for brisket. The live auction began at 6pm, scattered with announcement of winners, 1st, 2nd and 3rd all categories (see below).

The live auction had bidders coming out of the woodworks, just to name a few: a porch swing – $700; a pallet of grass – $155; underwater flounder light – $600; a Keurig and 2 boxes of coffee – $525; a 76qt. Yeti cooler – $1050; and a child’s rocking horse – $500. The bids were generous, bids as big as Texas – From the Heart.
