Alright Already!

GO's Sand BucketBy Georgia Osten
It happens every year about this time, the freezes are over (hopefully), our gardens look deplorable, and it’s time to get out there and plow everything under. I’ve begun, my muscles can prove it. I’ve actually diminished my garden space – again. I cut the vegetable garden in half a year ago. Sorry, my husband cut it in half – thank you Dear. Needless to say, everything in the vegetable garden froze except for some Rosemary. I’m hoping the asparagus didn’t, it’s been underground and I put a lot of mulch over it.

Dying to go ahead and buy new vegetable plants, but I’ll make myself “work” the garden first. Not like last year, when I got over anxious by buying trays of plants before the ground was ready. I don’t expect to get many answers, but what do you all do to prepare your gardens before planting? I’d love to know.

GO's Sand Bucket

My front garden on each side of my stairs is a mess. I’m trying to kill all the volunteer violets, dollar weed and especially the sticker vines. I used Round-Up, a friend told me Round-Up is very selective on which weeds it kills … It definitely hasn’t worked on any of the things I’m trying to “weed out.”

I’ve cut back all the hibiscus bushes, the variegated ginger and plumeria. I’ve planted pansies (they’ve died), geranium and begonias. Anyway, I’m on a roll. My Granny said to plant our vegetables by Good Friday, then a friend said, “No, you don’t plant on Good Friday!” Alright Already!

GO’s Sand Bucket is only one beach bum’s journal of life at the beach, probably something each of you can relate to. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts, visions and/or feelings of just exactly what the beach means to you. Email: [email protected]
