Another Delicious Gumbo Cookoff

The 7th Annual Driftwood Charity Gumbo Cookoff grows again this year. As always, Jackie and Brian Sticker hosted the ten gumbo teams on Saturday at their home in Driftwood Subdivision. The teams began cooking early Saturday morning under the two categories of seafood gumbo and chicken & sausage gumbo. And new this year was the margarita competition that four teams competed in. Samples of the gumbo were dished out to all visitors. Because in addition to the judged entries, teams were competing for the prestigious People’s Choice Award.

As the teams prepared their entries, visitors were treated to live music. Over 50 donated items were bid on in the silent auction, as well as the featured raffle for the YAK cooler. While the judges were upstairs deliberating, the silent auction winners were announced.

Jim, Barry, and Kacey judged the gumbos including four entries in the seafood category and six in the chicken & sausage category. Young Sage sampled the entries to select the Kid’s Choice award. Rayna and Amanda, seasoned local bartenders, judged the margarita entries. The judges had to taste, and re-taste, before officially deciding on the winners. After all tasting was complete, Jackie took the microphone to announce the trophy winners.

The People’s Choice voting was the closest ever with four teams separated by a single vote. The trophy was awarded to Back Row Ghetto Gumbo Team #1. And the Kid’s Choice Award went to UnRouxly Team 2. With over $8000 raised, all winners agreed to split the money between the Peninsula Sports Park and the three volunteer fire departments on the Peninsula. After all trophies were presented, Jackie thanked everyone for their support and cheered, “Let’s start up the music!” The party went on for the rest of the afternoon. Huge Thanks to Jackie and Brian and all the teams, sponsors, visitors, and tasters for making this event another great success.

Special Thanks to the generous sponsors, Richard & Lana Thompson, Shawn & Michelle Landry – Landry Insurance, Cody & Michelle Woodul – Texas Farm Bureau Insurance, Sauza Tequila, and to all of the friends, family, neighbors and the Bolivar Community and Businesses for making this event such a success.

Thanks Brian and Jackie Sticker for another great event
