Back to Back Easter Egg Hunts…and the real meaning of Easter

It’s a small town, but there is so much going on. It all started at 9:30 on Saturday morning, we headed over to First Baptist Church. Reverend Russ Atwood, was talking with the congregation along with dozens of children sitting on the floor around him. He would reach back into the basket and grab an egg. From inside the egg, he pulled out the cross. The children yelled “Jesus died on the cross.” He reached back again, grabbed another egg, inside a tiny circle of thorns, “they put a crown of thorns on Jesus’ head.” Another egg produced tiny nails, ”just like the nails they used to hang Jesus to the cross.” I gathered these kids knew the true meaning of Easter. After all, it’s not just about the Easter Bunny.

But the Easter Bunny had been there, having put out over 2000 eggs in the grass next to the church. The kids were let go, and it didn’t take long for all the eggs to be captured into their Easter baskets.

Then off we went to the Eagles Easter Egg Hunt, only to find out it was already in progress. Over 750 eggs had been scattered. There was a contest by age group on how many eggs each had captured. Prizes were given to the winners.

The Easter Bunny actually made an appearance at The Big Store around 1:00. Children young and old ventured up for a hug by the Easter Bunny, a loving old soul. Some were a bit cautious … Others were more than thrilled by the cuddly character.

Reminiscing, the Reverend and I recalled days gone by when we used to dye dozens of Easter eggs, stashing them in the fridge overnight. Somehow, they would appear in our baskets the next morning or hidden by the Easter Bunny for the hunt. We both remarked, “what did we do with all those eggs?” Well, there was potato salad, deviled eggs, just eating them, or smashing them on the sidewalk just for the fun of it. Some would eventually get run over by the lawn mower.

I hope you all had a wonderful Easter with church and family and friends, ham, potato salad and banana pudding, and lots of hard boiled eggs.
