Beach times

By Kelly Moad
I’m 32 years young and have been visiting Crystal Beach since I was born. My parents met here in Crystal Beach. We’ve moved around the United States but have always come back to visit Crystal Beach to see my grandparents and extended family. I have many fond memories of days spent in the sun – building castles in the sand and swimming in the surf. And now my parents have retired here. My husband, children and I don’t live in Texas right now but at least once a year we are able to make a trip back “home”. How lucky we are to go home to the beach! I am so thankful for the opportunity to share this fun and excitement with our children. It hit me the other day – I jumped in the golf cart to run back to my parents’ beach house to grab some sunscreen and sandwiches and get back to our “spot” on the beach. As I strolled down the steps of the house I realized how fortunate we are to have such a wonderful vacation spot at our fingertips…with all the comforts of home. I can remember playing alongside my brother and sister as our parents watched and chatted with family. Dad would take us “far out” in the gulf and teach us to body surf back to shore. Mom would have the sunscreen handy and lunch ready. And now, as an adult, I’m reminded of those times when I watch my brother wade out into the waves to “catch” the next big catch…or maybe he’s still fishing for it. And my sister is still there digging in the sand for shark teeth while soaking in the sun. And nothing makes me happier than to see Daddy take our kiddos “far out” in the water, or build a sandcastle with a moat until they get bored and destroy it. All the while my parents are the proud grandparents watching generations unfold.

So,you have to dig down into the sand to find the shark’s teeth? I’ve been coming to Bolivar for over 30 years with my family each summer, we’ll be there next week, and we are all so excited. I have about 10 photo albums filled with wonderful memories!
