Bolivar Peninsula Nature Trail

nature_0What is something visitors can do when they are beached-out or the weather is less than desirable for beach-sitting? How about an educational lesson for the young – and old – visitors? Have you been to all of the hotspots, and little-known spots, around Bolivar? We all know that Bolivar has more to offer than beaches, surf, sun, and souvenir shopping. The Bolivar Peninsula Nature Trail is the answer.

The clever proposal began with a blend of ideas from members of the community, originally born from the “Bolivar Blueprint” that came about after Hurricane Ike. The Trail “will enhance visitors’ experiences, increase the visibility and awareness of the Peninsula and its natural resources, and ultimately have a positive economic impact on the local community.” It is envisioned to be a 1-2 day excursion for visitors to learn about the Peninsula.

As visitors journey through our peninsula, the Trail will cohesively connect many of our local nature and recreation attractions. There are currently 12 sites that have been selected while more locations will be added as they come up. Maps, signage, and other improvements including parking enhancements and observation decks will accompany the Trail building process to guide visitors.

The project is supported by Bolivar Peninsula Cultural Foundation, the Chamber of Commerce, the Houston Audubon Society, and Galveston County. Brad Vratis, President of the Chamber of Commerce, said, “It would be in our best interest to support this [project].” Supporters plan to apply for grant money to make the improvements, install signage, and perform other necessary enhancements.

A public meeting is scheduled for February. Join other supporters in improving awareness for Bolivar Peninsula.

The following sites and improvements are included in the current draft proposal:
