Bon Appetit Y’all

By Georgia Osten
As I venture out of town every Thursday to do my shopping and carrying on, I’m always in the market for a lunch out, or maybe breakfast. One of my favorites is Jack in the Box tacos, even for breakfast. Two for $1. But wait, the other day, I had to pay $1.40. Are you telling me there’s 40 cents tax?? Maybe the price has gone up and I just didn’t realize it? My point is, every time I have Jack in the Box tacos, I’m reminded of way back in the day. Back in the 60’s, Jack in the Box tacos were my absolute favorite! Along with Baskin Robbins 42 Flavors. Holy Cow, who would have thought there could be 42 flavors?

I’m reminded of how crazy we were back then. Hanging out around Nassau Bay, Clear Creek, Kemah and Baycliff. We were an innocent group of kids – well, kind of innocent …

Growing up a little, getting married, my first meal for my husband was spaghetti. Not the meat sauce and boiling noodles type of spaghetti, but spaghetti in a can – Chef Boyardee by golly. He didn’t have a clue I couldn’t cook, I’m sure it was a real shocker. After all, his mother was a gourmet cook! She could sew too! She’d make drapes and reupholster furniture for goodness sakes. I’ll never forget the first time I had lamb chops was at their house. I’ve since tried to duplicate the recipe and failed miserably.

I caught my oldest daughter explaining to someone that while growing up a salad meant iceberg lettuce and tomatoes. She said she wasn’t introduced to romaine until she was practically grown up and it wasn’t from her Mom. You know what, I have to agree. I’m not sure when the word romaine ever became part of my vocabulary. I’m still not sure if I’m a fan, I just really like the way iceberg lettuce tastes. Especially on a turkey sandwich with mayo. The turkey sandwich is really something to look forward to after Thanksgiving – the leftovers.

Which reminds me, don’t eat too much Halloween candy. I had to force myself to NOT buy another bucket of peanut brittle the other day – it’s seasonal at Sam’s! $9.99, what a bargain. But I did break down and make some pumpkin nut bread. Gotta stick with the season. Bon Appetit Y’all.

GO’s Sand Bucket is only one beach bum’s journal of life at the beach, probably something each of you can relate to. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts, visions and/or feelings of just exactly what the beach means to you. Email: [email protected]
