BP Cultural Foundation Presents-RESCHEDULED

By Elinor Tinsley
The Bolivar Peninsula Cultural Foundation would like to invite you to join us on Wednesday, August 21, 2024 at the Eagles 3719 to hear a presentation by Dr. Ronald Chesser about his personal experiences with the aftermath of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant explosion in Pripyat, Ukraine in 1986, with Dr. Chesser being there from 1991 to 2006. The accident at Chernobyl is one of only two nuclear energy accidents rated at a seven – the maximum severity – on the International Nuclear Event Scale, the other being the 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident. The Chernobyl accident remains the only time in the history of commercial nuclear power that radiation-related fatalities occurred. You may ask how this affects you, being so long ago and so far away. Well Ron, as we call him, is sure to clue you in on that. With a PhD from Oklahoma University in Population Genetics, teaching at University of Georgia and working on the Savannah River Site (a nuclear production site for the US) becoming trained in nuclear technology and general radiochemistry, teaching at Texas Tech University, his 15 years at Chernobyl, working for the US Deptartment of State to inspect and dismantle nuclear facilities in Iraq from 2005-2013, working on a US team negotiating to dismantle nuclear facilities in North Korea and being a US Representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, Austria certainly qualifies Dr. Chesser to know a little on the subject.

Did you know that there are 54 operating nuclear power plants in the US, all having at least one reactor and as many as four? Did you know that the US has the most operational nuclear reactors on the planet? Did you know that Texas has two nuclear power plants and the closest one to the Bolivar Peninsula is in Bay City? Knowing what could happen and what did happen, makes us all the wiser for future generations. Knowledge is power and knowing what caused this tragedy could prevent it from happening again. Come join us for an informative powerpoint presentation and a question and answer session to follow.

Free for Bolivar Peninsula Cultural Foundation members and $5 for non-members, we will start check in at 5:30 PM with the presentation being at 6:00 PM. Come get a plate of light refreshments and get yourself at drink from the Eagles, cash bar only for non-Eagles members. Enjoy Ron’s presentation and Q & A session and stay for dessert to recognize Jane Long’s 226th birthday and to honor our dear friend Anne Willis, who will always be the Spirit of Texas to us. Hope to see you there.
