Build A “Sand” Dream

The Second Annual Build A Dream sandcastle building contest was on Saturday under beautiful skies. Once the fog burned off, the clouds parted and participants settled into their mounds of sand to create their dream. David Harris and Cathie Ropp of Bolivar Tourism & Visitors Center hosted the contest in honor of Rusty Standridge. Rusty was a huge supporter of the sandcastle building event, but sadly passed away last year. The presenting sponsors are Latitude 29.2 Surf Shop and Bolivar Escapes Vacation Rentals. Of the ten teams that entered the competition, six were adult teams and four were kid teams. Promptly at 10am, they started digging, wetting, and shaping the sand. What began as piles of sand slowly turned in to recognizable shapes and figures. The adult teams remembered the joy that the children already know…playing in the sand is for all ages. There were castles and sea creatures and religious sculptures…and more.

Once again, the contest drew crowds of family members, friends, and passers-by lining the beach and strolling the perimeter to see all angles. Watching the sand artists sculpt their masterpieces was an all day affair. Some of the designs were quite detailed and took the full 5 hours to complete. With the wind and sun drying out the sand, one team suffered a partial collapse and had to quickly re-build before time was up.

The kids’ entries were judged at 1 pm and the adults had until 3 pm. Awards were given for First-Second-Third Place in both adult and kid categories. And People’s Choice awards were also presented.

Congratulations to all the participants and winners. Thank you to the sponsors, volunteers, and supporters. Continue building dreams and bring your talent back next year.
