Bulls run wild on Bolivar

The Port Bolivar Volunteer Fire Department hosted the annual ‘Bulls on Bolivar’ Saturday night at Festival Park. The weather was great to welcome the very large crowd that surrounded the arena to watch the mens and ladies bull riding, mutton busting, and a sheep scramble for kids. The show was entertaining as the bulls were meaner this year, leaving very few riders making it to 8 seconds. The mutton busting kids delighted the crowd as they tried to stay on the back of a scrambling sheep. Rodeo clowns competed in freestyle bull fighting, and a couple of brave cowboys from the crowd volunteered to ride in a “buffalo” race. The Bonus Bull ride closed out the competition as a rodeo cowboy could take home the $3000 prize if he could stay on the bull for the required time. One last bull rider, local hero Hoss Strimple, rode a ‘bull’ to the center of the ring and jubilantly jumped off, waving to the crowd.

Finally, everyone enjoyed the rest of the evening as they were treated to live music, great food, and festivities under the pavilion. Thank you to all the generous sponsors, volunteers, and supporters!
