Buoy ‘oh Boy

An early morning cruise on the beach turned out to be quite profitable for this beach bum. One day last week, with camera in hand, I went to the beach a little earlier than normal. It was too early for a sunrise shot, so I headed down the beach to see what may have washed up. I decided to head west so when I headed back the sun would be coming up in front of me…what a stroke of good luck. After a short distance, I spotted a washed up buoy partially buried in the sand. It was orange in color and through the clear top you could see a bunch of electronics. It looked important…and expensive. I was able to pull it free from the sand, and lift it on the truck. I wasn’t sure what to do with it, but worse case it would make a fine piece of yard-art.

As soon as I had it loaded, a friend drove up and said the buoy was worth $500. No kidding? It was a seismic sensor of some sort, and there were several that had been lost. The company was offering a reward to turn them in and he knew someone that had collected.

I headed home to wash the sand off, and written on the side was “$1000 Reward” and a phone number. It took me about 5 seconds to get my phone and make the call. Sure enough, this was legit. The following morning, a representative came to the house, put cash in my hand, and retrieved the buoy.

Sometimes it just pays to get up early.
