Comeaux, VanZandt Throttle Regulars in Par-3 Events

By Mike VanZandt
Steady Michael Comeaux’s four over par 31 wasn’t pretty but it was good enough to win the 6/17 Par 3 contest from the Gold tees Tuesday. Comeaux also won two skins worth $25 each while Mike Mitchell’s opening hole birdie on the 3d hole won the other skin. Shannon O’Brien and Robin Giddens both birdied the 7th hole to deny each other a share of the skins pot. VanZandt finished second with a 32, edging Mitchell and O’Brien’s brace of 33’s. Paul Williams and Robin Giddens carded 35’s, Dabney Harrison and Charlie Brannan stumbled to 11 over par 38’s, and David Buchanan broke 40 by a single shot.

Juneteenth saw Mike VanZandt capture first place from the turquoise tees with a three over par 30 that included a birdie on the second hole. Buchanan and John Milby, who tied his own turquoise course record of 26 last week, finished one shot back with 31’s. Comeaux and VanZandt each captured one skin. Ranch leading money winners Shannon O’Brien and Michael Comeaux both carded five over par 32’s. The Dabtician struggled to an eight over par 35, Sweet Chuckie Brannan was nine over par and James Irvine, who regularly wins the Sunday scramble, had six double bogeys on his way to a brutal 41.

The 5:15 Tuesday/Thursday Par 3 contests are played on separate layouts inside the Par 36 regular course. The Gold course plays an average of 20-25 yards shorter than the Turquoise on each hole. Low score pays a measly $10 with the rest of the prize money split between the players who win a hole outright.
