By Linda Elissalde,
What an interesting experience!!! The Bolivar Peninsula Cultural Foundation (BPCF) hosted a Galveston County Historical Commission meeting in Battery Kimble bunker at Fort Travis. How often do you meet in a bunker? Margo Johnson and Marsha Fredenburg provided lunch for the group. BPCF board members Anne Willis and Ange Scheibel also helped with this event. GCHC President Ralph Stenzel called the meeting to order after everyone had enjoyed a delicious repast. Mr. Stenzel is the motivator behind the restoration of Fort Travis bunkers. His keen interest and passion have led to many improvements in our state park.
Officers reported on myriad projects underway by the GCHC. Morris Gould, Mary Smith, Melodey Hauch and Helen Mooty reported continuing activities. Upcoming engagements include the October 20 Galveston County Museum Fall Fund Raiser, the Jane Long Festival on the third weekend in October, and a Train Museum trip sometime in September. President Stenzel closed the meeting with an invitation to visit a bunker that is in the midst of renovation.
This gathering was certainly a most unique happening. Maybe we can congregate again in another restored bunker.
