Déjà vu

By Georgia Osten
“The Beach is Closed” – Are you kidding?
Galveston closed it beaches and then, minutes later, all beaches in unincorporated Galveston County decided to close the beaches for the July 4th weekend. That meant Us! Then minutes later, it was posted that Beaches would be open to foot traffic only from 7-11am and then again 4-8pm. Then, minutes later, people began posting that only golf carts were allowed on the beach.

All this in an effort to discourage travel to the Bolivar Peninsula. How on earth was this going to be enforced? A bit skeptical, but I was all for it!

We had quite a gang coming for the weekend, but we decided we would make it work if that’s what we were supposed to do. After all, we had the pool, we would have plenty to do. We had a hankering for crabs, so we went to Joe’s, that’s easy crabbing for us. We also went to a friend’s house on the canal and caught several there. Next up, the water slide – thanks Bobby and Tracy – always a good time.

Friday morning, the people began to come to the beach to set up. They would drive their canopies down to the beach, unload everything, then get their vehicles off the beach. Later on Friday, vehicles began to stay on the beach, mostly golf carts. By Saturday, everyone and their uncle were gathered on the beach, but the absence of the big trucks, jeeps, razors, ATV’s and everything but golf carts was amazing. The absence of vehicles cruising up and down the beach was a Godsend. It was a breath of fresh air!

Even July 4th was familiar to me, Déjà vu, it brought me back to a time when we felt safe and we cherished our beach. Families came out and shot their fireworks. We gathered all the kids to go down to the beach and we enjoyed the displays. The moon filled up the sky.

The next day, the beaches were spotless. We welcome this type of activity and these crowds with open arms. I hope everyone had a wonderful 4th of July. God Bless America!

    Thank you, Georgia.
You captured the feeling of this holiday.
We enjoyed hot dogs and had A CAPITAL FOURTH blaring on the TV. Then we went out on our deck to enjoy that gorgeous moon and the gift of fireworks up and down the beach. It was a indeed a good July 4, 2020 in Crystal Beach, Texas for us.
