Dewey Jones Rescued from Gulf of Mexico

by Mike VanZandt
The brilliant putting of Alan Lind, George Flores, and Pete Heller carried Shannon O’Brien’s team to a five shot win in the Tiki Bar & Grill Tournament Saturday. Benefitting Crenshaw School, the event was highlighted by the return of former LPGA Touring Professional Georgia Guidry-Maples. Miss Georgia, who is attempting to regain her tour playing privileges after a long layoff from the game, couldn’t overcome the unfortunate blind draw that paired her with Trevor McGuire, Lance Ferguson, and Mike Barnett.

The eighteen-hole scramble, played on both the regulation and Par 3 courses at the Ranch, attracted an outstanding field of players and celebrities to the beachside resort course. Hosted by Chris and Karen Gatlin and overserved as usual by local bartending legend Gregory Rodriguez, a good time was had by all.

Favorites Drew Barnett, Jason Pettitt, Kevin Rock and Mitchell Powell struggled to a five under par second place finish. Super-senior Dennis Whitmer’s team, which included Howard Porteous, Charlie Brannon, and Blue, never got untracked and finished at 4 under par despite the stellar play of Brannon. Michael Comeaux, Brent Finch, Scott Langdale and Booger tied for fourth place with John Milby, Aaron Comeaux, Garry Korry and Russ Berge.

Dabney Harrison, Todd Prieur and Don Graham, playing one man short because expected team member Arnold Palmer couldn’t land his Lear Jet at Crystal Beach International Airport, tied for last place with local pro Mike Mitchell, Robin Giddens, Dewey Jones, and Donnie Cork.

Jones, plucked from the Gulf of Mexico by the Coast Guard Cutter Dauntless last Saturday after his stringer of flounder dragged him across Bolivar Roads into the ship channel from his honey hole on Frenchtown Road, thanked the many well-wishers who expressed their concern. The Coast Guard also rescued Dewey’s stringer of flatfish who are safe in the Jones’ freezer.
