Kicking off the dog days of Spring this past weekend at Gregory Park in Crystal Beach was the inaugural Disc Dog Competition. The event is one of several held throughout Texas in the spring as a qualifier for the national tournament held in September. With disc dog competitions spreading internationally, the winner at Gregory Park receives an invitation to the national tournament. Crystal Beach residents Debbie and Ricky Michael organized the event, attracting many local spectators. “Good for a start,” says Debbie of this better-than-expected turnout for its first year, and they plan to hold the event annually.
The competition included 5 events: Bulls Eye, Spot Landing, Freestyle, Time Trial, and Distance & Accuracy. Eighteen competitors from all over Texas registered, and several competitors brought more than one dog to compete. The most common breeds are border collie, cattle dog, and Australian shepherd, though all breeds can compete.
With hours of practice bonding owner and dog, they learn to work as a team to ensure accuracy. It requires an athletic and acrobatic dog plus precise disc throwing by owner. “Putting the disc in the correct spot is critical,” explains Paul Winsworth from Wimberly, TX.
Competitors use special discs for competition made with softer plastic to prevent damage to the dog’s mouth, and differently weighted discs depending on weather conditions. Surely they took into account the windy days this past weekend, making accurate disc throwing even more difficult. Disc dogs usually range in age from 1.5 years old up to 10 years old, “4-6 years is the best,” says Paul.
The excitement of the friendly but serious competition was felt throughout Gregory Park. The cheers and applause encouraged the disc dog teams. And the dogs were enjoying every minute of the “game”!
