Doris Ricke Robinsom

By Brenda Beust Smith
We recently lost a most beloved friend, Doris Ricke Robinson (formerly Sr. Mary Louis), who has been a close part of our lives since we built our beachhouse back in 1974 across from Doris and her fantastic husband John. For decades they watched over our home when we weren’t there, helped us through hard times, mentored us when we didn’t know what we were doing, there just aren’t words enough. Doris would have turned 96 Dec. 31 (this picture was taken not long ago!) In lieu of flowers, Doris asked that memorials be made to: Dominican Sisters of Houston Retirement Fund, 6504 Almeda Rd, Houston, TX 77021. Here is her obituary and memorial notes:

DORIS RICKE ROBINSON
Dec. 31, 1922 – Dec. 9, 2018
Doris was born in Galveston, Texas, where she lived with her parents, Louis and Hildegard Herbst Ricke, who preceded her in death. Doris graduated from Sacred Heart in 1940 and entered the Dominican Convent in Houston in 1942. While with the Dominicans, Doris earned her BA in Education and later received a Masters of Music degree from the University of Texas in Austin. As Sister Mary Louis, Doris taught music in various Houston and Beaumont Catholic schools in the 1940s & 50s.

After 25 years with the Dominican Sisters, Doris requested and received a dispensation from her vows. She taught music in Houston Public Schools. In 1969, Doris married John Robinson, the love of her life. Together they retired and moved to Crystal Beach on the Bolivar Peninsula, where they lived for 30 years and were longtime members of Our Lady By the Sea Church in Port Bolivar. After John died, Doris moved to Galveston and most recently lived at the Meridian until her passing.

Doris is survived by one niece, Paula Siegel and husband Michael of Gretna, NE, and many cousins and friends in Galveston. She will long be remembered for her beautiful singing voice, sparkling blue eyes and enthusiastic love of life.

Services will be held FRIDAY, Jan. 4, 10am, at St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica, 2011 Church St., Galveston, TX.

Memorials may be directed to Dominican Sisters of Houston Retirement Fund, 6504 Almeda Road, Houston, TX 77021.
