Driving me crazy

Every once in a while, even a Beach Bum can have a serious thought, so bear with me on this one. Lately, I’ve been driving to and from a friends’ house where I’ve been dog sitting. I probably go over to care for their pets 5 or 6 times a day, so that’s a lot of driving up and down Highway 87. Once a week, I go into League City/Pearland, so I actually use the ferry at least once a week. That’s a lot of driving up and down the highway. There are varying speed limits all the way from Rollover to the Ferry. Speed limits are set for safety reasons. They’re there for a reason. Going 20 or 30 in a 55 mph zone is NOT safe.

Now, let’s think back to when we took driver’s ed, or the driver’s exam to get a license to drive a vehicle. Remember the rule about not crossing a solid yellow line? Remember what that lane is that runs down the middle of the highway with a solid yellow lane on both sides with arrows pointing left or right? That’s a turn lane, not a passing lane. Remember what a turn signal is on your car? It’s to let people know that you’re turning onto a street or possibly into the turn lane.

Are we so complacent that we don’t care anymore? When you’re driving something as big and heavy as a car or truck, you sure as heck ought to have your mind on driving and nothing but driving. How about a multi lane highway, like 45? When I find someone just mozying along in the fast lane, someone who makes me have to move over to the next lane on the right to pass them, I’ll glance over to look at them, and nine times out of ten, they’re texting on their cell phone. Do you know what can happen in just one split second by taking your eyes off the road? For criminey sakes people, what are we going to do??

I know not everyone reads my Sand Bucket and if you do read it, you’re probably NOT one of these offenders, so I apologize to you for my ranting, and I promise to behave myself next week.

Please be safe out there!

GO’s Sand Bucket is only one beach bum’s journal of life at the beach, probably something each of you can relate to. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts, visions and/or feelings of just exactly what the beach means to you.
