Fishing Report and Tide Chart Feb 17 through Feb 25 2013

By Ed Snyder Outdoors
This past weeks fishing produced mostly reds, drum, sheepshead, and flounder with the reds and drum mainly hitting on the Gulf side with the flounder, sheeps-head, and some reds and drum hitting on the bay side.  No speck action after weds of last week but when they were in a few nice ones were caught.

Speckled Trout:
Slow, but when the surf temp gets back into the mid 60s they should turn on. (Limits, 10 trout per day at 15 inches minimum with one only over 25 inches).

Redfish:
Excellent redfish action on the gulf side with lots of Bulls and Slots caught. CAUTION: here anglers be sure to obey the limits or the Game Wardens will know you personally, one angler found out the hard way after catching illegal bull reds and keeping them. He was fined $4,000, lost his truck, fishing tackle and fishing license! (Limits,3 reds per day at 20 inches minimum to 28 inches max with one over 28 inches tagged and kept as your 3 red limit).

Black Drum:
Plenty of action on Bulls and keeper eaters, But too many 30 plus inch Bulls are being kept with some anglers finding out how expensive they can be after meeting the wardens. (Limits, 5 drum per day at 14 inches minimum to 30 inches maximum, ut one drum allowed if OVER 52 inches when kept as part of your 5 fish limit).

Flounder:
Steady action on the flounder for anglers fishing bay side bulkheads with mud minnows, finger mullet, or Berkley gulp, (Limits, 5 flounder per day at 14 inches minimum).

Gafftop:
No Report, (Limit- 14 inches minimum no creel limits).

Sheeps-head:
Good sheepshead action on both sides with one 22 incher caught, (Limit 5 per day at 15 inches minimum).

Sandtrout/gulftrout:
A few, No Limits.

Whiting:
Surf providing a few good catches, No Limits.

You mention flounder being caught near the bulkheads on the bay side. Are you talking about the metal panel walls lining both sides of the cut from the bridge to the bay?
Thank you for your reports. Very informative especially for those of us who have to drive a long way to fish there.

    Hi Ed,

I’ve Ben wanting to come out there and try my luck. I’m a rookie angler and have very less knowledge of how tides work and how water temp effects fishing. I live about 2hrs away from rollover pass. Would you suggest to wait for this current cold front to be over and try my luck when the temp gets down to like 65-70? Your reports are really helpful and keep up the great job ?
