Fishing Rollover Pass

By Capt. Mike Williams
IRONIC IRONY–In the spring of 1981, I became a field tester for L@S BAIT COMPANY IN LARGO FLORIDA. My job was to design different lures and color patterns, then field test those lures to see which lures work BEST for the surf and bays of the Galveston Bay Complex. One of the lures I designed and field tested in and around ROLLOVER PASS in that time period was a lure that has almost become a legend in the green surfs of the Texas Coast, late April – late September. The lure body was a 51M MIRROLURE which I also helped to develop. The back color of the lure was the color PINK. The side reflector of the lure was silver and the belly color was yellow. The above colors I had already field tested both bay and surf and I already knew that the combination of those 3 colors would be deadly for big trout. I told the people at Mirrolure to make this color pattern and they did. The lure came on line in the early eighties and they numbered the lure as the 51 MR 704 MIRROLURE and then given a name. In 2013, a man throwing this lure in sight of ROLLOVER Pass caught one of the biggest trout caught in Texas last summer and won the CCA Fishing Contest for the entire Upper Texas Coast for biggest trout. THIS LURE IS KNOW EVEN TODAY AS THE “TEXAS CHICKEN” and still in the starting line of Mirrolure CLASSIC LURES.
