Gallery By The Gulf Artist of the month for June

Please welcome
Tama “Sissy” Rawson
Artist of the Month for June
at Gallery by the Gulf, 1980 Hwy 87, Crystal Beach, TX
An artist reception will be held
Saturday, June 11, 2016 from 10 am until 4 pm.

Painting has always been something I have enjoyed since I was a teenager. Starting with paint by numbers, then putting together surfer “hang ten” models from the 60’s and painting them. I then began to use pastels, charcoals and oils. Oils have always been my favorite. Raised in East Texas town of Newton, I spent a lot of time outdoors and drawing outdoor landscapes and waterfalls. After graduating high school, I attended Stephen F. Austin University and received a degree in education with electives in fine arts. After graduation, I got my first teaching job in Jasper, Texas where I raised two boys with my husband Jerry. We spent a lot of time at Sam Rayburn Lake camping, which I credit most of my inspirations for my paintings of animals and landscapes. My last 12 years of teaching was as a reading specialist where I used my art to help students write their own stories and illustrate them. After Hurricane Ike, we purchased a lot in Crystal Beach and built our house. My husband, Jerry, during his fishing trips began to carry his camera with him taking pictures of birds, sea shells and boats. I immediately began to use his pictures for my paintings and this started my beach scenes. However, I painted a picture for Christmas In The Park poster contest in Jasper and won the background for the poster for their advertising in 2015. I was the featured artist on the Galveston Art Walk for the month of November 2015 for the Flea By The Sea Shop. Also, my paintings have been for sale and displayed at Home By The Sea on the Peninsula. When possible, because I am a reading specialist I work 3 days a week, I am able to paint when I can with the Painted Ladies of Crystal Beach (fun group). I am a member of the Galveston Art League and I continue to watch videos and paint with other artist as much as possible, because you can learn so much from other artists.

We look forward to viewing Sissy’s art. She and Jerry are a delightful couple, and we have enjoyed visiting with them at Bay Vue UMC. Now, we discover that she is an acclaimed artist.

Gallery on the Gulf has been a grand addition to the peninsula. What a pleasure to see more fine art in a really fine setting!
